We also can repair fiberglass tubs and shower bottoms that are cracked and leaking. This cracking and leaking problem usually occurs because the tub or one piece unit wasn´t supported properly when it was installed. The good news is that these fiberglass one piece units or showers don´t need to be ripped out and replaced by new. This repair process involves installing a “tub inlay bottom” that stops any leaking. It is a structural repair with a professional appearance similar to a bathmat. ReSurface Pros has done this type of repair hundred of times with excellent results. Tub inlay bottoms solve a serious problem in a convenient way at a fraction of the cost of replacement.
Support From Underneath
Cracks on the bottom of a fiberglass tub or shower pan are 99% of the time caused by a small air cavity on the underside. Fiberglass being not as rigid as a cast iron or steel tub will flex a small amount with every use. In time this constant flex will result in a crack. The first step is to eliminate the cause and drill holes throughout the bottom and filling with a high quality industrial foam { not the ones sold at hardware stores} that will not compress over time. Filling the air cavity under the entire bottom ensures that a crack will not appear elsewhere on the bottom in the future.
Fiberglass Skim
The second step is to skim the crack and all drilled holes with long strand fiberglass, long strand is the most durable type of fiberglass avaliable.
White inlay bottom
Finally , an inlay bottom is adhered to the bottom of your tub or shower pan. This inlay is custom cut to the dimensions of your tub or pan. The corners are rounded, the edges are beveled and the side that faces up is a slip resistant surface, giving the impression that there is a bathmat inside. This inlay looks neither out of place or gives any impression of being repaired. When back in use 24 hours later , under foot it will feel much more solid and stable than when originally installed.
